Tips for Your Fall Photography Mini Session

9/22/24

POSTED IN: Children, Family, Other

Mini sessions are a shorter, condensed version of a full 1 hour session, lasting only 25 minutes. They are designed to be quick, efficient, and affordable, while still providing you with high-quality photos. The location is chosen in advance, which allows me to streamline multiple sessions in a short period. Below are some tips to best prepare for your mini session!

  1. Clothing Suggestions: Consider warm tones like burgundy, mustard yellow, burnt orange, olive green, deep red, rust, or navy paired with neutrals. My camera also loves reds and blues in particular. Layers, textures, subtle patterns, and even accessories can add a lot of visual interest. When coordinating outfits, aim to complement each other instead of matching.

  2. Don’t Skip Naps or Meals: Make sure your little ones are well-rested and fed before the session. Avoid snacks if possible, but if you need to bring them, save them for emergencies. Since Mini sessions are quick, eating can take up precious time.

  3. Bathroom Breaks: Make sure everyone takes a bathroom break before arriving, as facilities may not always be accessible at parks. Consider checking out the location online ahead of time or arriving early to locate bathrooms, especially if you have a child who may be potty training.

  4. Small Toys for Smiles: If you’re worried about getting smiles from small children, bring a small, favorite toy for me to hold above the camera.

  5. Prepare Them: Explain to your children what to expect during the session and why these photos are important. Mentioning a treat afterward, like ice cream, can help encourage cooperation!

  6. Arrive Early: Try to get there a little ahead of time to settle in and prepare.

  7. Picture Combinations: These can vary based on who is included in the session. Typically, my goal is to capture at least the following:

    • Whole family together in two settings.
    • Each parent with children; if time allows, we’ll do each parent with each child.
    • Children together and individually, aiming for two settings of the kids together.
    • Parents together alone, usually one quick shot.
    • Candids and special moments throughout the session.
    • Special picture requests: I’m happy to adjust my process to capture what you like!

  8. Have Fun: Keep things light and positive with each other to help everything go smoothly and make it enjoyable!

Here are a few small sample images of families that made some great fall clothing choices!
